America, A Depository Of The Gifts Of The World
Wow, it's a new year and a new millennium! What a privilege it has been to
come into your homes and offices around the world. Being able to share with
you has been one of my great joys! As we enter this new millennium, one of the major challenges for all of us
will be to learn to live together on this one planet we all share. Hopefully we will all discover that by living and working together we will all benefit. I believe America is a great example of this. Guess what has made America
powerful? The blending of many ethnic streams that have come to America over the last 200 years. No country has been such a depository of the gifts of the world like America. For over 200 years, people have come from all over
the world to America, bringing with them their recipes and their food. Their
music and their dance and their artistic ability. The gift of law and the
gift of government. The gift of medicine and the gift of healing. The gift
of religion and the gift of the work ethic. All of this did not start here. All of it came here from all the countries
of the world. In fact, it is an incredible list - how many people outside
their native countries live in America. The most Japanese outside of Japan
live in America, the most Italians outside of Italy live in America, the
most Koreans outside of Korea live in America, the most Puerto Ricans
outside of Puerto Rico live in America. You can go right down the list,
country after country. The list is so long it's unbelievable, but that is
what has made America so unbelievably powerful. The contribution of all the
ethnic streams that have been coming here for 200 years is incredible. We must all now recognize what an incredible opportunity we all have before
us, as this giant planet seems to get smaller all around us. And remember
that it is our diversity that when mixed together can create genius. It is
the combination of the soft sound of the flute and the crash of the cymbals
that make up the brilliant sounds of the symphony orchestra. In our
challenges to learn better how to live together, let us also find new
opportunities to create future genius and miracles in our world and with

The grey sky of morning contained an ominous quality. The clouds were so thick they were almost tangible. Then I saw it. Faintly sandwiched between the clouds was the hint of a rainbow. The Priceless Gift of a Knee-High Smile
She was just over knee-high standing next to me in the checkout line. I first saw her eyeing a display of candy as she followed her mother and brothers through the store.
Everybody is Somebody
I wrote about my life and all that I have had to go through.
I also ended that story with a little bit about how my life has since changed, but I want to take it further.

Did you ever watch a bird in flight? Especially ducks or geese as they take off from the water? The take off is not the soaring grace of flight; it is a struggle, an accomplishment to get the bird out of the water and into the air. The REAL victory of flight is not the feat of soaring on air currents to a final destination, once in flight the bird has relative ease from his struggles. The real victory is in getting past the struggles of starting, just getting out of the muck.

Recently I approached a traffic light where a man stood in shabby clothes with a three-legged dog by his side. As I waited for the light to change I looked at this scene with compassion and felt an urge to contribute something. The sign he was carrying indicated that he was homeless. The people in my car commented that he was a strong young man, there were plenty of employment opportunities, and why should anyone give to people who are capable of working. They indicated a kind of mild contempt for this man soliciting funds whom they felt "should" be working. My thoughts were on him and the fact that he cared for and fed this crippled dog. I rolled down the window and gave him several dollars for which he expressed enormous gratitude.

Did you ever wonder how you ended up where you are in your life? Is life a culmination of a series of very carefully planned moves or a hodge podge of serendipitous events? Garbage In Its Place
There is nothing worse than seeing garbage blowing down
the street of your neighborhood, or finding broken shards of
glass at the local swimming hole where children play.

their lives after becoming tangled in waste or mistaking
garbage for food. It is up to each of us to make an effort to
minimize this unsightly, and sometimes hazardous,

Growing up, I remember my Dad had some really good friends. They had the most amazing, positive and magnetic energy. Arguably, they were also among the "coolest" of their time. One in particular, is not only admired by me, but by countless others who affectionately know him as, "Big O." "Big O" is called "Big O" for several reasons. The most obvious; he's big!
