Five Reasons To Journal
Keeping a journal during the coaching process is one of the most simple and effective aids a client can use. Below you will find five reasons why I encourage my clients to use a journal during their coaching time. I hope that you will be motivated to commit your creative pursuits to a journal. REINFORCES SELF-ESTEEM: When artists share their work, they share some part of themselves to their audience. For some artists, performing or displaying their art comes easily. They have confidence, courage and the requisite skill to handle both success and rejection of their art. When an artist moves into that place, the focus switches to what's happening inside the artist, rather than what's happening to the art. It takes time to separate personal issues from past experience, creativity and business issues. Journaling facilitates this change in between coaching sessions. AIDS IN PROBLEM-SOLVING: A journal provides space to work out problems in detail. The client can spell out the situation, examine the pros and cons, percolate over the material and come to a final informed decision. The client can also discover information gaps, ask questions and share concerns, that may also lead to further research. ENCOURAGES EMOTIONAL EXPRESSION: When an artists' emotions are triggered, writing in a journal provides
space to contain and diffuse strong emotions. After processing those emotions the perspective of the artist is restored, the situation becomes more clear, and life in general, returns to more balanced place. RAISES EMOTIONAL AWARENESS: Emotional expression increases emotional awareness in artists. Some artists become overwhelmed with their feelings, using journaling as a safe place for emotional expression. Other artists can't access some of their emotions. Journaling through their emotions becomes a time of discovery and positive change. Restoring balance to an artist's life is one of the best results of journaling. PROVIDES A WRITTEN RECORD: Journaling through the creative process provides a written record of the negative and positive aspects of the process. The artist gains a broader perspective of their work. Artists' rereading success stories, reviewing past plans to create better plans for the next project. Ignorance and Fantasy
Are beliefs not often the children of ignorance and fantasy? Consider the heavenly view of the world that young souls entertain at the height of their innocence, when their youth has been surrounded by love and filled with happiness. Hear their laughter. Dreams expand in a vacuity of knowledge like a laughing gas and induce the blindest, the purest joy. Ignorance is bliss, as they say, because it spares us the mental restraints associated with knowledge (which reveals the limits of reality and hence the impossibility of our fantasies). It is the ultimate playground where the mind can build castles in the air, create a wonderland, and live delightedly in this kingdom of reverie. It paves the way for the reign of error, as it leaves us to believe whatever we like. Everything that is desirable is realizable, if not real, until we find evidence to the contrary. Santa Claus eventually dies of our old age ? when we are no longer so young, so green, that we are easily fooled by a tall story.

For those people who lost friends and loved ones in the September 11th World Trade Center attacks, the anniversary will re-open the wounds and renew the pain of great loss. For the rest of us, it is a painful reminder of our vulnerability. The anniversary renews our grief for the loss of security and innocence we enjoyed in peaceful times.
How do we experience the anniversary of our greatest national disaster in a positive way?
Talk about it with others. How far have we come? What have we learned? How are we feeling? as a country, and as individuals?
Honor those we knew and loved who lost their lives. Write about them, look at the pictures again, and talk about them. Keep their memories alive openly.
Be with your supporters, at home and away. Reconnect with the positive people in your life. Sharing with others always makes the burden lighter.
Take care of yourself, physically and emotionally. Do physical exercise? breath deeply and live fully. Do something you always wanted to do. Take a long walk.
Turn your most negative experience to a positive, by giving to others. It is through giving that you will receive so much more in return. By helping others, anger and pain are transformed into power; the power to make our world better in the wake of crisis.
